Whitefriars (1720-1980) is arguably one of the best known English glassmakers, records show it first started producing glass just off Fleet St. in London in 1720. James Powell, a London Wine Merchant and entrepreneur, purchased the factory in 1834.
In the mid 1960s the designer Geoffrey Baxter who had joined the factory in 1954 directly from the Royal School of Art began designing with a new approach to glass design this resulted in introducing the "Textured Range" which was released in 1967.

There is a long tradition of street selling in the Liberties. The Iveagh Market was built in 1902 by the Earl of Iveagh to give the people a dry place to sell their goods. The market stands on a site that had once been taken up by an import...ant brewery. The market itself is a fine piece of architecture, with its Queen Anne-style facade on Francis Street and spacious galleried interior. The keystones of the several arches at the front of the building are ornamented with carved heads, which represent the various trading nations of the world.

Rare brooch by Victorian designer William Burgess

When Jill Cousins tuned in to a recent episode of the programme, she could scarcely believe her eyes when Geoffrey Munn, one of the show's jewellery experts, held up a series of watercolour sketches of jewellery designs by William Burges, the Victorian architect and designer who created Cardiff Castle.

Mr Munn announced that the six brooches in the designs were his "most wanted" items in the world, for which he had been searching for more than 20 years.

But as there was no evidence to suggest that they had ever even been made, with jewellery by Burges extremely rare, he felt sure that he would never see any of the brooches in the sketches, which are held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Mrs Cousins raced upstairs to the jewellery box on her dressing table, to inspect a broken silver brooch, set with a heart-shaped garnet and turquoises fashioned as forget-me-nots that had lain neglected at the bottom of her jewellery box, and her mother's before her, for more than 40 years.

Christie's has raised a record HK$4 billion (£315 million) at its Asian auctions in the first half of 2011, as a range of high-end goods exceeded their pre-sale estimates. According to the auction house, sales in the first half were up 68 per cent over the first half of 2010, indicating an extremely buoyant market for everything from fine wines to antiques.
